Roughly 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found numerous other marked automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state initial examinations indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they stated.
City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.
A high-ranking official commented the incident rendered him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in five years prior.
