The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
